Government investing in salmon fishing
Nova Scotia's renowned salmon fishery along the Margaree River is about to get more popular with anglers. The provincial government announced Friday it will invest $175,000 to increase salmon production at the Margaree Salmon Hatchery. The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture will also take over ownership of the facility.
"The Margaree River is a world-class salmon river drawing anglers from all over the world. This new investment boosts salmon production, aids conservation of the stocks and supports tourism activity in the area," said Premier Rodney MacDonald. The government has been working with the Aquatic Development Association of Margaree for years on enhancement work. In recent times, it has become more difficult for the group to meet the increasing funding requirements to operate the facility. "Recreational fishing is important to our province as a healthy outdoor activity and salmon anglers travelling to the area generate about $1.5 million for the region," said Ron Chisholm, minister of fisheries and aquaculture.
"The board is pleased with this investment announcement. We are looking forward to working with government on the enhancement of the hatchery," said Robert Hart, president of Aquatic Development Association of Margaree.
The Margaree River is a heritage river and has been an historic salmon run and fishery for many years. |
